Pan Cheng, a student from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences studying the Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Industries Studies program, City University of Macau, won first prize at the 2024 Hong Kong Digital Art Design Competition (Spring) with his design product “Rhyme of the Heart.” Supervised by Associate Professor David Xiao Daibo, the design was a blend of traditional and modern ink-painting inspired by Zhuangzi’s Dream of the Butterfly. In the painting, Zhuangzi and the butterfly face each other, presenting contemplation on the philosophical nature of the self and the world. The third edition of the annual competition, organized by the Hong Kong Arts Development Society, received 5,530 submissions. The panel selected 312 designs for first prizes, 646 pieces for second prizes, 1,262 pieces for third prizes, and 343 pieces for merit prizes.
