To improve the academic ability and research level of the postgraduate students, City University of Macau (CityU) Graduate School held the second talk in its lecture series yesterday at the Taipa campus. The lecture, titled “Exploring Advanced Research Methods for Master’s and Ph.D./Doctoral Students: A Case Study in AI”, was delivered by Zhu Tianqing, associate dean of the Faculty of Data Science. By sharing cutting-edge research findings and practical cases, the lecture aimed to assist postgraduate students in deepening their research in the field of AI, providing more avenues and pathways for their academic journeys.

In his speech, Ip Kuai Peng, vice rector of CityU and dean of Graduate School, emphasized a keen insight, a solid professional foundation, and a pioneering spirit for exploring advanced research methods. He encouraged postgraduate students to stay at the forefront of their disciplines, thoroughly study the latest research findings, and broaden their research horizons. He also stressed the importance of practice and innovation, urging students to try new methods, engage in interdisciplinary exchanges, and make a use of modern technological tools such as big data and AI to enhance their research competitiveness, contributing to the advancement of their fields.

During the lecture, Prof. Zhu Tianqing elaborated on various techniques and methods for postgraduate students in the field of AI, covering aspects such as starting research, study planning, research methods, and thesis writing. “Scientific research is a process of exploration, with no fixed path to follow,” said Prof. Zhu, highlighting that students should actively sharpen skills and professional knowledge, master research methods, and integrate AI tools to provide innovative solutions to their research topics.

She emphasized the equal importance of academic output and effective presentation of results, highlighting an audience-centered approach, a clear structure, clarity, and persuasiveness through the appropriate use of tables, graphs, and bullet points. She reminded the students to plan their time, and set clear tasks from the beginning of their studies, such as regularly writing papers, engaging in in-depth discussions with supervisors, and participating in team collaborations. She also mentioned that completing tasks as planned was essential for making steady progress in academic careers and producing high-quality output.

Zhou Long, associate dean of Graduate School, concluded that CityU would continue to host more high-level academic lectures, providing postgraduate students with more learning opportunities and exchange platforms. He emphasized the aims to cultivate high-quality academic talents with innovative spirit and practical abilities, helping students achieve greater breakthroughs in the academic field.
