The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has recently announced the list of its latest Fellows, which includes over 120 prominent Chinese scholars. Among them, Professor Zhou Wanlei, Vice Rector of the City University of Macau and Dean of the Faculty of Data Science, has been elected as an IEEE Fellow in recognition of his outstanding contributions to cybersecurity and privacy protection

Professor Zhou specialises in the research areas of cybersecurity, privacy protection, computer networks, distributed systems, and related fields. He has successfully led and completed 13 projects with the Australian Research Council (ARC) and supervised dozens of PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. He has published over 500 academic papers in international journals and conferences, including more than 300 papers in top industry journals. He has also co-edited eight academic books, published four monographs, and chaired dozens of international computing conferences. Stanford University and the Elsevier Data Repository have ranked Professor Zhou among the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” (Career-Long Impact) for consecutive years.

The IEEE is an international association of engineers in electrical technology and information science and is the world’s largest professional and technical organisation, with over 460,000 members across more than 190 countries. It leads the development of cutting-edge technologies in high-tech domains, including aerospace, biotechnology, computer engineering, new energy, geographical information systems, neural networks, wireless communications, and others.

The IEEE Fellowship is the highest honour and membership distinction within the association, bestowed exclusively upon those who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in electrical and electronic engineering, computer science, information technology, and related fields. In 2025, the total number of IEEE Fellows stands at 338, with less than 0.1% of IEEE members receiving this promotion each year.
