CityU showcases outstanding achievements of China National Arts Fund talent training project, empowering Macao cultural innovation and dissemination

City University of Macau (CityU) recently hosted the final achievement presentation of the “Macau Historic District Virtual Reality Experience Art Creation Talent Training” project at the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library. The eight-day exhibition presents six outstanding works that leverage cutting-edge technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to explore different themes including traditional festivals, cultural heritage preservation, and tourism experiences. These works comprehensively showcase the rich multiculturism and unique charm of Macao Historic District, opening a new digital chapter for cultural inheritance and innovation. The project, funded by the China National Arts Fund (CNAF) and the Cultural Development Fund of Macao SAR Government, was organized by CityU’s Faculty of Innovation and Design (FIAD). It aims to promote the deep integration of Macao's historical culture with VR technology, empowering cultural innovation and dissemination. Since its launch in July 2024, the project has successfully trained 27 cross-disciplinary art creation talents.

Distinguished guests and officials attended the opening ceremony, including Cheng Wai Tong, deputy director of the Macao Government Tourism Office; Tam Sio Wa, head of the Division of Tertiary Educational Cooperation and Exchange of the SAR Government Education and Youth Development Bureau; Ho Cheok Fong, head of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Cultural Affairs Bureau; Xu Dongjie, deputy director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao; Hoi Kam Un, member of the Administrative Committee of the Cultural Development Fund; and Cheang Chak Ian, vice president of Federation of Associations of Cultural Sectors of Macau. Industry leaders such as Wu Chok Kit, president of the Macau Institute of Engineers; Chao Sio Leung, president of the Macau Designers Association; Xie Lingfeng, chief architect of China United Creative Design Co., Ltd.; as well as representatives from MGM’s cultural and arts department and Macao Expo Group also attended the event. Vice Rector Han Wei and Pro-Rector Vince Chu Te Lin, along with faculty and student representatives, were present to witness this significant occasion.

In her speech, Vice Rector Han Wei regarded this project as an important practice of the University's commitment to integrating art and technology in education, injecting new momentum into Macao’s cultural and creative industries. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to CNAF and the Cultural Development Fund for their support and looked forward to further deepening cooperation in the future.Wang Po-Hsun, executive associate dean of FIAD and project leader, noted that the trainees used VR technology, an innovative approach, to showcase the cultural charm of Macao Historic District, fully demonstrating their creativity, passion, and professional skills. He encouraged them to take this as a starting point to continue exploring the integration of art and technology, contributing to the development of the cultural industries.

Following the ceremony, guests and visitors toured the exhibition, experiencing the distinctive and innovative works firsthand.

Moving forward, CityU will further strengthen collaborations with domestic and international universities, research institutions, and cultural enterprises to explore more innovative approaches to cultural dissemination. The University will also continue to provide technical support and creative solutions for the preservation and development of Macao’s historic district.
