CPPCC National Committee Vice-Chairman Zhu Yongxin visits CityU for inspection and guidance

A delegation led by Zhu Yongxin, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and executive vice chairman of the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy, visited City University of Macau (CityU) today for inspection and to offer guidance on its development. CityU’s Chancellor and Chairman of the University Council, Chan Meng Kam, and Rector Jun Liu warmly welcomed the guests and accompanied them on a tour of the campus and teaching facilities. Both sides engaged in discussions on topics such as higher education development and talent cultivation. Attending the meeting were members of CPPCC National Committee, including Jin Yongwei, secretary general of the China Association for Promoting Democracy, along with Vice Rectors Zhou Wanlei, Han Wei, and Ip Kuai Peng.

Chancellor Chan Meng Kam warmly welcomed Vice-Chairman Zhu Yongxin and his delegation on behalf of the University. He expressed respect and gratitude for Zhu’s support and guidance for CityU, and provided an overview of the University’s historical development.

Rector Jun Liu introduced CityU’s developmental positioning, educational characteristics, and recent achievements. He highlighted CityU’s objective of developing into a metropolitan university with “Macao’s Characteristics, China’s Soul, and Global Vision” as its educational vision, along with its commitment to “Serving Macao and integrating into the Greater Bay Area,” while focusing on cultivating high-end applied and practical talents who are patriotic and love Macao. Liu mentioned that CityU has been strengthening interdisciplinary construction and the integration of technology supported by data science, creating an innovative model for talent cultivation.Rector Liu emphasized that to align with the development of the Macao SAR, CityU would soon launch two major strategic initiatives: first, the establishment of the Institute for Urban and Sustainable Development, which would support Macao’s smart city construction and sustainable development; second, the establishment of the Academy for Seniors to help senior citizens thrive in their silver years and contribute to the implementation of Macao’s health blueprint objectives.

Vice-Chairman Zhu Yongxin fully acknowledged CityU’s achievements in recent years. He pointed out that higher education in Macao has experienced leapfrog development, establishing a comprehensive and distinctive educational system that has become a vital force in promoting the diversification of Macao’s economy. He praised CityU’s focus on driving interdisciplinary fields supported by data science and expressed his hope that the University would continue to integrate into the community, serve the Greater Bay Area, and closely align its educational efforts with societal needs. Zhu continued by highlighting the challenges and opportunities faced by higher education amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence, noting that the future of higher education and the revolutionary changes in teaching and learning are worthy of in-depth study. 

Vice-Chairman Zhu encouraged CityU to actively pioneer innovative models for talent cultivation while maintaining its unique features. He urged the university to establish itself as a knowledge hub that promotes the transition from knowledge impartation to skill training, becoming a place for students to seek knowledge while cultivating their comprehensive skills and exploring pathways for the university’s development in the Greater Bay Area and across China.

 

Other attendees from CPPCC’s Committee on Education, Science, Health and Sports included: Tu Bo, level II bureau rank official; Li Zongzhu, secretary; Peng Daoyun, security officer; and Zhou Pu, head of the education department. CityU members: Pro-Rectors Wicky So Kam Hung, Robert Chan Chon Pat, and Vince Chu Te Lin; Council members Cintia Chan and Sandy Chan; Kathy Che Ka I, director of Rector’s Office.
